Neighbourhood Watch is active and successful in both East and West Hanney. There are more than 20 active Coordinators. However - there are some areas not covered - and coordinators are needed for these.
Although Hanney is a ‘low crime’ area - there are still many crimes committed there each year - burglaries, theft, rogue traders (eg drive tarmacers, roof fixers, tree loppers), car crime, vandalism. It is essential to remain alert, be suspicious of any caller, and in particular keep an eye on the older people who might be distracted or confused by a caller. There should be no hesitation to call the police on 08458 505505 immediately if you are suspicious, and dial 999 in an emergency - an emergency is if a crime is being committed, or is about to be committed, or if there is a risk of serious injury.
Our Neighbourhood PC is PC Phil Redmond, ably supported by Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) - Myra Stokes. These two officers are based in Faringdon and also cover many other villages. To contact them, (or any Thames Valley Police officer) telephone 08458 505505.
I joined the Met Police in October 1989, after 5 years service in the Royal Marines and served at several different stations in London. I transferred for family reasons, to Thames Valley Police, in February of 2006, where I was stationed at Abingdon initially.
I live in North Wilts with my wife, Caroline and 4 year old, Michael.
My interests, outside of work, are essentially sport related and I am a keen golfer, although I do also read a lot of history, time permitting around child care and general day to day activities.
I am delighted to be the neighbourhood officer for this area, and although the workload is far greater than I could have anticipated, I will endeavour to provide the best possible service I can.
I am married with two teenagers. Before moving to the area when I was 12. I moved around considerably, due to my father being in the Army. I am fiercely proud of all service personnel, and have relatives still in the forces. I have been involved in the criminal justice system for 10 years. Joining TVP in July 07, I was previously a caseworker for the Crown Prosecution Service.
I am passionate about Rugby and try to watch London Wasps as often as I can (shifts allowing) and discovered golf a year ago which looks a lot easier when other people do it.
I believe although still developing, the return of Neighbourhood policing is giving the service back to the public it serves. I have since I started, noticed a favourable shift in public opinion towards the police in general and I hope I can provide the service you would expect.
Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators are still required, to replace some who have left, and also to assist existing coordinators. There are some areas not covered, and people living there will not receive warnings. Coordinators normally cover about 10 to 15 homes. They receive warning messages (by phone or email) from Thames Valley Police if crimes or other problems occur in the vicinity.
